Report on First Lecture of the Year-long Lecture Series on “Commerce in Assamese Language and Literature”

The Department of Commerce, Gauhati University, in association with Mangaldai Commerce College and Pragjyotishpur Sahitya Sabha, successfully organised the first lecture of the year-long lecture series on “Commerce in Assamese Language and Literature” at Mangaldai Commerce College on Thursday, June 11. The lecture focused on the theme, “Relationship between Literature, Commerce and Management,” highlighting the interconnections among these fields.
The lecture series was formally inaugurated by Prof. Prashanta Sarma, Dean, Faculty of Commerce and Management, Gauhati University. In his inaugural address, he emphasized the importance of promoting academic discourse in the Assamese language and encouraged scholars and students to explore the interdisciplinary relationship between commerce, management, and literature. He also recited a self-composed poem exclusively based on the interconnection between commerce and literature.
In his welcome address, Mr. Jitumoni Sarma, eminent writer and Vice-President of Pragyotishpur Sahitya Sabha highlighted the significance of integrating commerce with Assamese language and literature and appreciated the initiative of organizing a year-long lecture series on the subject.
The event featured Dr. Tilak Chandra Das, Associate Professor, Department of Commerce, Gauhati University, as the Chief Guest. In his insightful presentation, he explained how literature enriches communication skills, ethical values, leadership qualities, and managerial understanding. He further elaborated on the relevance of literary knowledge in enhancing decision-making, organizational behaviour, and business communication.
Dr. Das also highlighted the significance of classical Indian texts such as the Bhagavad Gita, Arthashastra, and Chanakya Niti in the fields of commerce and management. Drawing examples from these works, he discussed timeless principles of ethics, governance, strategic thinking, leadership, resource management, and decision-making, emphasizing their continued relevance in contemporary business and organizational practices.
The programme was further enriched by the recitation of self-composed poems by Dr. Bhababhuti Sarma, Former Vice-Principal of K.C. Das Commerce College, Guwahati, and Mr. Ujjwal Jyoti Saharia, Assistant Coordinator of IQAC, Mangaldai Commerce College.
Addressing the gathering as Chairperson, Dr. Runumoni Lahkar Das, Principal of Mangaldai Commerce College, spoke on the necessity of preserving and promoting the Assamese language in higher education. She appreciated the collaborative efforts of Gauhati University, Pragjyotishpur Sahitya Sabha, and the college in organizing the lecture series and expressed hope that the programme would inspire students and researchers to engage in meaningful academic pursuits.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Mrs. Minu Bora, Assistant Professor, Mangaldai Commerce College. She expressed gratitude to the distinguished guests, resource person, faculty members, students, and all others who contributed to the successful conduct of the programme.
The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation of the faculty members and more than 80 students from the college.
