Report On One Day Awareness Programme on “Menace of Dowry and Dowry Stop Abhijan

The NSS Unit of Mangaldai Commerce College, in collaboration with the IQAC, successfully organised a one-day awareness programme on the theme “Menace of Dowry and Dowry Stop Abhijan” at the college premises on Tuesday, 19 May 2026.
The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from more than 80 students of Higher Secondary and B. Com classes. The meeting aimed to educate students about the legal, ethical, and psychological harm caused by the dowry system and to encourage the youth to take a firm stand against this social evil.
The programme commenced with a welcome address delivered by Mr. Sabibar Rahman, Programme Officer of the NSS Unit, Mangaldai Commerce College.
The event featured Mr. Sekhar Mazumdar, a renowned social worker, as the resource person. He delivered an informative talk on the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961. The students were made aware of the legal consequences of demanding or accepting dowry, including severe penalties and imprisonment.
Dr. Runumoni Lahkar Das, Principal of the college, delivered an enlightening speech on the evils of dowry and highlighted how this social practice continues to adversely affect families and women in society. In her speech, she emphasized the importance of education, equality, and moral values in eliminating such social evils. She also encouraged the students to become responsible citizens and spread awareness against dowry in their communities.
Mr. Ujjwal Jyoti Saharia, Assistant Co-ordinator of IQAC, Mangaldai Commerce College, highlighted how the dowry system has gradually degenerated into a commercial transaction, placing immense psychological and financial burdens on the families of brides.
After the meeting, the faculty members and students resolved to undertake the following actionable steps:
1. Anti-Dowry Pledge: All the students, especially the male students, took an oath not to participate in, demand, or accept any form of dowry in marriage.
2. Campus Campaigns: The college will continue to organise inter-college dialogues, street plays, and awareness drives to actively empower students and promote social awareness against dowry.
The programme successfully fostered a progressive and socially responsible environment within the college campus. The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks offered by Dr. Dhiren Deka, Co-ordinator of IQAC, Mangaldai Commerce College.
