The Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), Mangaldai Commerce College successfully organized an Awareness Programme on Leprosy on 4th August, 2026 in the Digital Conference Hall of the College.
The programme was organized with the objective of creating awareness among students and faculty members about leprosy, its causes, symptoms, treatment, prevention, and the importance of eliminating myths, misconceptions, and social stigma associated with the disease. The programme also highlighted the significance of early diagnosis and timely treatment in achieving the goal of a leprosy-free society.
The programme commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Dhiren Deka, Co-ordinator, IQAC, who warmly welcomed the Resource Person, faculty members, and students. In his address, he emphasized the importance of organizing health awareness programmes in educational institutions to promote public health awareness, social responsibility, and community engagement.
The Resource Person, Dr. Rinamani Sarmah Bordoloi, Head, Department of BMST, Mangaldai Commerce College, delivered an informative and insightful lecture on various aspects of leprosy. She explained the causes, symptoms, modes of transmission, diagnosis, treatment, and preventive measures associated with the disease. She highlighted that leprosy is completely curable through Multi-Drug Therapy (MDT) and stressed that early detection and uninterrupted treatment are essential to prevent disability and stop the spread of the disease. She also appealed to the participants to eliminate stigma and discrimination against persons affected by leprosy and to spread scientific awareness within society.
Speaking on the occasion, Mrs. Minu Bora, Head, Department of Assamese, Mangaldai Commerce College, appreciated the initiative taken by IQAC in organizing the awareness programme. She emphasized the importance of creating awareness at the community level and encouraged students to become ambassadors of health awareness by disseminating accurate information among the public and helping to remove social prejudices related to the disease.
The programme concluded with a formal vote of thanks, expressing sincere gratitude to the Resource Person, dignitaries, faculty members, students, and all those who contributed to the successful organization of the event.
The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from students and faculty members, making it a meaningful and informative awareness initiative. The interactive session enhanced participants' understanding of leprosy and reinforced the importance of awareness, compassion, and collective responsibility in building a healthier and stigma-free society.
