“Silpi Divas” was observed on 17th January, 2026, at the college campus of Mangaldai Commerce College in remembrance of Rupkonwar Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, the legendary Assamese artist, playwright, filmmaker, lyricist and cultural icon, on the occasion of his death anniversary. The programme was organized by the Students’ Union, Mangaldai Commerce College, in association with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), Mangaldai Commerce College.
The programme commenced with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp, marking the formal inauguration of the event. Thereafter, Mr. Ranjit Sarma, Principal (i/c), Mangaldai Commerce College, delivered the inaugural address. In his speech, he highlighted the significance of observing Silpi Divas and emphasized the invaluable contributions of Jyoti Prasad Agarwala to Assamese art, literature, cinema and culture.
A detailed and insightful speech on the significance of Silpi Divas was delivered by Dr. Dhiren Deka, IQAC Coordinator and Associate Professor, Department of Management. He spoke about the life, works and ideals of Jyoti Prasad Agarwala and his enduring contribution to the cultural renaissance of Assam. He also emphasized the relevance of his vision and creative spirit for the younger generation.
The programme provided an opportunity for the students and members of the college community to remember and pay tribute to one of the greatest cultural icons of Assam. The observance also helped create awareness among the students about the rich cultural heritage of the state and inspired them to appreciate and preserve Assamese art and culture.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks to all those who contributed to the successful organization of the event. The observance of Silpi Divas was meaningful and inspiring, leaving a lasting impression on the students and participants.
