Mangaldai Commerce College observed World Environment Day 2025 on 5 June 2025, jointly organized by the Eco Club and IQAC, Mangaldai Commerce College, in collaboration with the Indian Red Cross Society, Darrang Branch. The programme was organized with the objective of creating awareness among students and faculty members about environmental protection, climate change, and the adverse effects of plastic pollution.
The programme commenced with the plantation of saplings by Mr. Ranjit Sarma, Principal (i/c), Mangaldai Commerce College, symbolizing the institution's commitment towards afforestation and environmental conservation. The plantation activity aimed to encourage the college community to actively participate in protecting and preserving the natural environment.
A day-long workshop on the theme “Beat Plastic Pollution and Impact of Climate Change” was subsequently organized at the Digital Conference Hall. Dr. Pranjit Sarma, Assistant Professor, Department of Geography, Mangaldai College, attended the programme as a resource person. In his insightful presentation, Dr. Sarma highlighted the harmful effects of excessive use of plastic in everyday life and explained its serious implications for the environment. He also discussed the impact of climate change across different countries of the world and emphasized the urgent need for collective action to address environmental challenges.
Another resource person, Mr. Lutfur Zaman, Associate Professor, Mangaldai Law College, spoke on the role and significance of the Red Cross Society. He elaborated on its contribution to providing relief during emergencies and disasters, promoting health and well-being, and fostering a more peaceful, humane, and understanding society.
A significant highlight of the programme was the formal declaration of the formation of the Youth Red Cross Unit at Mangaldai Commerce College by Mr. Haren Kakati, Chairman, Indian Red Cross Society, Darrang Branch. The formation of the unit is expected to provide students with opportunities to engage in humanitarian activities, social service, disaster preparedness, and community welfare.
Mr. Jayanta Sarma, Treasurer, Indian Red Cross Society, Darrang, initiated the programme, while Dr. Dhiren Deka, Coordinator, IQAC, Mangaldai Commerce College, explained the objectives and significance of the workshop. Their contributions helped establish the broader purpose of the programme and encouraged active participation from the college community.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from faculty members and students, who found the sessions highly informative, insightful, and enriching. The programme successfully created awareness about the pressing environmental challenges of plastic pollution and climate change while also highlighting the importance of humanitarian service through the Youth Red Cross initiative.
The workshop concluded on a positive and meaningful note with a formal vote of thanks delivered by Mr. Hari Chandra Sarma, Honorary Secretary, Indian Red Cross Society, Darrang District Branch. The programme reaffirmed Mangaldai Commerce College's commitment to environmental sustainability, social responsibility, and community engagement.
