Mangaldai Commerce College Library celebrated National Librarian’s Day on 12 August 2025 to commemorate the 133rd birth anniversary of Dr. S. R. Ranganathan, the Father of Library Science in India. The programme was organized with the objective of paying tribute to his invaluable contributions to the field of library and information science and acknowledging his enduring legacy.
The programme was attended by the teaching staff, library staff, and students of Mangaldai Commerce College. The celebration commenced with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp and floral tribute to Dr. S. R. Ranganathan. Mr. Ranjit Sarma, Principal (i/c), Mangaldai Commerce College, honoured the occasion by offering flowers as a mark of respect. Mr. Gautam Kumar Baruah, Librarian, Mangaldai Commerce College, followed by offering floral tribute, after which the teachers and library staff also paid their respects.
Thereafter, the Principal (i/c), Mr. Ranjit Sarma, delivered an insightful speech on the life, achievements, and significant contributions of Dr. S. R. Ranganathan. He highlighted Ranganathan’s pioneering role in the development of library science in India and emphasized the importance of libraries in promoting knowledge, education, and intellectual development.
The floral offering ceremony continued throughout the day, allowing students and members of the college community to pay their respects to the great librarian and visionary. The observance of National Librarian’s Day provided an opportunity for the college community to remember Dr. S. R. Ranganathan’s remarkable contribution to the library movement in India and to reaffirm the importance of libraries in academic and social development.
The programme concluded with a renewed appreciation of the enduring legacy of Dr. S. R. Ranganathan and the vital role played by libraries in fostering a culture of reading, learning, and knowledge sharing.
